Our Guide To Bernedoodle Grooming

Grooming is an essential part of caring for your Bernedoodle. Not only does regular grooming keep them looking neat and tidy, but it also contributes to their overall health and well-being. Bernedoodles, a crossbreed between Bernese Mountain Dogs and Poodles, inherit a variety of coat types, ranging from curly to wavy, which require specific grooming techniques to keep them in top condition. In this guide, we'll walk you through the basics of Bernedoodle grooming, covering everything from brushing their coat to maintaining their hygiene.

Understanding Bernedoodle Coat Types

Before diving into grooming techniques, it's essential to understand the different coat types Bernedoodles can have. Depending on the genetics inherited from their Bernese Mountain Dog and Poodle parents, Bernedoodles can have coats that range from curly to wavy. Understanding your Bernedoodle's coat type will help you choose the right grooming tools and techniques.

Tools Needed for Grooming

To groom your Bernedoodle effectively, you'll need a few essential tools. These include a slicker brush or pin brush for removing tangles and mats, a stainless steel comb for thorough detangling, a high-quality dog shampoo and conditioner, nail clippers or a grinder for trimming nails, and ear cleaning solution and cotton balls for ear cleaning.

Brushing Your Bernedoodle's Coat

Regular brushing is key to keeping your Bernedoodle's coat healthy and free from mats. Aim to brush your Bernedoodle at least a few times a week, focusing on areas prone to tangling such as behind the ears, under the legs, and around the tail. Use a slicker brush or pin brush to gently remove tangles and mats, followed by a stainless steel comb for thorough detangling.

Bathing Your Bernedoodle

Bernedoodles typically do not require frequent baths unless they get exceptionally dirty or smelly. Aim to bathe your Bernedoodle every 6–8 weeks or as needed. Use a gentle dog shampoo and conditioner formulated for sensitive skin to prevent drying out their coat. Be sure to rinse thoroughly to remove all shampoo residue, as leftover soap can cause skin irritation.

Trimming Your Bernedoodle's Coat

While Bernedoodles have low-shedding coats, regular trimming is still necessary to maintain their appearance and prevent mats. It’s always a good idea to consider seeking out the services of a professional groomer, especially if you have any concerns or are unsure about trimming your Bernedoodle’s coat.

If you feel comfortable doing so, focus on carefully trimming around the eyes, ears, paw pads, and sanitary areas. Use grooming scissors or clippers with a guard attachment to achieve an even trim. If you're unsure or have any concerns about trimming your Bernedoodle's coat yourself, it’s best to consider seeking professional grooming services.

Cleaning Ears and Eyes

Regular ear and eye cleaning is essential to prevent infections and maintain your Bernedoodle's overall health. Use a veterinarian-approved ear cleaning solution and cotton balls to gently clean the outer ear canal, taking care not to insert anything into the ear canal itself. Similarly, use a damp cloth or eye wipes to clean around your Bernedoodle's eyes, removing any debris or discharge.

Trimming Nails

Keeping your Bernedoodle's nails trimmed is important for their comfort and mobility. Trim your Bernedoodle's nails every 2–4 weeks, depending on how quickly they grow. Use dog-specific nail clippers or a grinder to trim the nails, taking care not to cut into the quick (the pink area inside the nail that contains blood vessels and nerves). Again, if you have any hesitations, we advise you to consider professional grooming services.

Maintaining Dental Hygiene

Dental care is often overlooked but is crucial for your Bernedoodle's overall health. Aim to brush your Bernedoodle's teeth daily using a dog-specific toothbrush and toothpaste. Dental chews and toys can also help keep their teeth clean and healthy. Additionally, schedule regular veterinary dental check-ups to address any potential dental issues early on.
